The most common trunk repair is the trunk struts that hold the lid open while you load and unload your trunk. It keeps the lid out of your way. Over time they may leak and no longer offer a strong support for the lid. The two sided pistons containing nitrogen and oil may leak and lose its strength over time and warrant replacement for safety. There are a few additional common trunk lid problems. One symptom is the trunk lid pop latch switch in the driver door which isn’t working and doesn’t communicate with the latch telling it to open the trunk. This happens when the small switch in the door fails and needs replacement.

A more common symptom is the trunk won’t close easily or takes repeated tries of slamming the trunk lid to make it latch or it won’t latch at all and the opposite can also occur where it is always latched and won’t open. Other latch problems are when the latch doesn’t close there is a small spring that may be weak, doesn’t hold tension or came off. Another problem is a micro switch that lets the dash know whether the trunk is open or closed. This latch also communicates with the dash light for an open trunk warning light and may continually beep and show open until the harness is disconnected or the latch replaced. The pop open trunk door control may also not work. A new trunk latch may be needed. The wiring harness may also show signs of corrosion around the plug. Occasionally, the emergency release handle can get stuck. When the trunk lid handle won’t open the trunk, the handle may be the problem and need replacement.

Another trunk symptom is when the locking actuator pushes against a small plastic part which unlocks the trunk latch. The small motorized actuator may work fine, but the piece that moves the locking mechanism tends to break. There are a number of vehicles that use this mechanism including the Jetta. In this case the locking actuator must be replaced. Linear Automotive’s certified body shop can get your trunk lid working again, whether a latch, handle, switches, wiring harness or more. Linear Body Shop offers affordable pricing to fix your auto trunk lid.
