When driving down a road in a severe storm and the windshield was not adequately cleaned by the wipers, the drivers vision can be obscured, depth perception deceived, and distance confused when looking through a blur of water, dirt and possibly mud thrown up onto the windshield by passers. It’s a dangerous scene played out repeatedly in bad weather. About 23% of the total accidents each year are weather related. A simple check of the wipers and quick replacement is important to keeping your vehicle safe.

The wiper safety components include the windshield wiper blades, back window wipers and headlight wipers. These should be checked and replaced about every six months or when the weather seasons change. Cold weather can freeze the blades and cause hardening or brittleness, and they can chip or even break in half and the brackets can freeze and break from ice and snow. In hot weather the wipers can warp and cause the blades to bounce across the window. It’s easiest to follow the weather and replace accordingly for the season’s weather conditions. There are winter wipers available that can withstand the low freezing temperatures, just as there are spring/summer wipers that can move heavy rains and mud more quickly than winter blades.

Some symptoms of wipers beginning to fail are they may leave a streak across the windshield, which will be followed by larger patches being missed by the wiper. It’s best to go ahead and replace before it gets worse. If the wipers were warped from the heat there may be a chattering noise as it skips across the windshield due to an irregular curve caused from warping. The ultraviolet sun rays deteriorate the rubber causing the wiper blades to fall apart. Sometimes they will even fall off the frame, and then the frame against the glass has potential to scratch your windshield. Other causes of wiper failure can be due to car washes and ice scrapers. Depending on the wiper frame conditions, you may need to replace the whole wiper mechanism including the brackets.

If you are located in a windy location with adverse weather conditions, the wind can damage the wiper frame bending it away from the window and it too will skip across the windshield, missing most of the rain or snow on the window. Today, there are special wind resistant wipers that resist high wind uplift, and the wiper will cling to the high slope or regular sloped windshields keeping your window dry. The back window wipers tend to get overlooked at times since they are typically used less, but they still need replacement at the same times as the front windshield wipers. Since they are subjected to the same weather conditions as the front wipers, they will deteriorate rapidly even if they have not been used as much.

The headlight wiper mechanisms also need checking for functionality at the same times as the windshield and back window wipers. The headlight wipers arm and wiper blades can be replaced separately if needed.
