Mercedes Cabin Air Filter
Cabin Air Filter
If you live in a very dusty environment or drive on dirt roads, you may want to replace your cabin filter more frequently. Replacement is easiest during the maintenance services, since most forget them when engaged in their daily activities. The addition of the cabin air filter is a relatively newer feature added to the auto. From the initial development it was a luxury feature when the cabin filter was first installed in the 1980’s. It has since become a standard feature since 2006 to have a cabin air filter in autos. About 90% of all vehicles manufactured now include this filter as standard. The air is filtered before coming into the cabin and is usually located under the glove box on the passenger side.
The reason replacement during the maintenance services is that many people don’t even know their vehicle has a cabin filter. With the impeccable Mercedes performance features, the air filter goes along with making the interior more pleasurable. If any passengers have allergies, it is no longer a luxury it has become a necessity to keep the filter replaced at regular yearly intervals for filtering out the pollens, dust and pollutants.
There are basically three quality levels of cabin filters. All the replacements filters are layers of paper fan folded with a frame giving them shape, which is usually a stiff plastic material. Some provide pollen, bacteria, smoke, exhaust, contaminant and extra filtering protection with micron sized filtration. The typical filter is a fan folded paper filter with thin layers of paper catching the dirt particles in the folds. Another type of paper filter offers a layer of activated carbon between the paper layers, which provides bad odor absorption with a micron filtration size of about 0.001 micron. A third choice is the electrostatically charged multiple layered paper filter providing filtration properties of about 0.22 microns.
One method of checking whether the filter needs changing is the use of the anemometer tool, which measures the air speed coming from the heater. A reading of about 9-12 mph would be considered typical from the heater. If the speed of the air drops to under 9mph then it is definitely time to replace. The air should be sweet and fresh smelling and if it is not, that’s probably the best indicator of all for replacing the cabin filter. You don’t want to smell last week’s burger and fries or pizza smells in the auto cabin or even the wet dog from camping last month. If there is a lot of dust already in the filter, it will pick up food, pet and smoke smells more easily and they will linger. Depending on the Mercedes model and year you have will determine the number of cabin filters you will need in the glove box area or under the hood near the windshield on the right side. There are sometimes four small filters and even some have one very large oversized filter. Most are rather easy to replace for the home auto mechanic.
Cabin filters are easily forgotten seldom remembered and seldom get changed. Linear Automotive can provide a new cabin filter to fit your Mercedes that will improve the air quality in your cabin. If you are in need for heater or air conditioner servicing, the air filter will ensure that the air is not stuffy, or old smelling, and it will bring back that fresh smell, so that being in the cabin will be more enjoyable.
