One of the most common repairs is the replacement of the SUV power liftgate struts that assists in raising the liftgate to the open position. The strut design is composed of two chambers the piston and shaft assembly. Inside there is high pressure nitrogen gas and lubricating oil. There is a temperature control valve and an orifice control which controls the flow of this mixture from one side of the piston to the other. On the opposite side of the piston the tube is larger so will exert a larger force against the other side even if the pressure is the same on both sides. The higher force will try to expand the strut to the open position above the 40 degree crossover angle and then free rise to the full open position. When the temperature is colder there may be a noticeable difference in the strength of this force. There is a temperature / pressure relationship in a fixed volume, so when the temperature decreases the pressure decreases. Then in summertime during warm temperatures, the pressure increases. When the temperature is at or below 32 deg. F. there is no free rise, but will hold the 40 degree angle position and must be assisted to a full open position.
Another common occurrence for an SUV liftgate is when the actuator may stick or need replacement by not allowing for the opening of the liftgate. The liftgate actuator is located inside the door panel and locks and unlocks the tailgate.
