Driving with a faulty brake light can be dangerous and an invitation for a collision. Brake light repairs may not be just a burnt out light bulb, but can include a whole variety of other components and wiring that work together to make your brake lights function. There are a number of things that can go wrong with brake lights. One is a bad brake light switch. Sometimes a switch can stick and the light won’t go off even if it is released. The switch may be analog but on some newer vehicles, it may use digital sensors rather than a switch. We can test for continuity between the terminals, and sometimes the switches may have multiple terminals.
Sometimes issues with brake lights include the brake pedal which makes contact with the switch that may be a small plastic pad as in a Honda or Toyota vehicles. Sometimes the switch may slip out of position. When the pedal is pushed it should make contact with the switch causing the brake lights to engage and go off when released. Another pedal related brake problem includes the tail lights not going off, which would indicate that the brake booster may be a problem. If the pedal doesn’t raise enough, check the pedal by pulling up on it to see if the lights go out. Either a pedal position error or a switch misalignment may be the cause.
Sometimes diagnosing light and electrical issues can be difficult. Another problem is when the tail lights don’t come on and/or the third brake light are not working. Sometimes there may be an unplugged or broken electrical harness or even a bad fuse. Systematically, we will test the brake lights to determine the problem. If only the third brake light works at the top of the rear window, the brake light switch is ok. We will test the emergency flashers for wiring, lamp problems and the sockets. If there is a separate circuit we will test for blown fuses.
When wiring issues are involved we look for bad plugs, frayed wiring, and broken or short circuits. Linear Automotive are experts on electrical issues and can sort this out and provide a solution for your brake lights. Step by step we methodically check the brake system for specific results leading us to the solution. Some less common problems may involve the stop lights which may be on the same circuit as the turn signals, causing the lower brake lights to not function, but the third stop light will still work. If your auto has an LED third brake light the bulb cannot be replaced singly, but the entire light assembly must be replaced.
